Every year in August Gelson’s Super Markets puts on a Golf Fun Day as a way to thank and further connect with their vendors. Each year has a different visual theme in which we also subtly, or maybe not so subtly hide golf themes into the art. Here are some of my favorite themes and some of the pieces that went with them.
2009 – Wheaties
In 2009, we parodied the look of a Wheaties cereal box for the theme. It was a fun project for sure! The Save the Date sign (above) looked like the front of the box which also carried over to the front of the invitation (below). On the inside of the invitation, I replicated fun print on the inside of the box.
2010 – Coca-Cola
In 2010 we replicated the look of Coca-Cola for our golf tournament. This was fun because it involved stylizing “Gelson’s” like the classic Coca-Cola logo. It was also the year that they came out with the lime Coke, so I got to throw some lime green into the mix for a little extra pop!
On the invitation, I had the outside reflect rich reds the regular Coke, while the inside reflected grays of the Diet Coke.
2011 – Beach Theme
In 2011 we veered from the “parody themes” of the past and decided to go with a nice relaxing beach theme. I was allowed to experiment a little and tried out a hand-drawn look combining organic textures and colors from a beach environment.
2012 – Haagen-Dazs
In 2012, we reverted back to the parody theming for one last time in taking a page from the book of Haagen-Dazs ice cream. The Save the Date sign above shows a golf ball hidden in the scoop of ice cream on a cone which again, carries over to the front of the invitation below.
On the inside of the invitation, the golf theme is interjected a little more subtly in that the cherry on top of the ice cream is sitting on a golf tee.
2013 – Queen Mary
2013 was the year we opened up a new store in Long Beach, so we wanted to highlight and celebrate that during our golf tournament. For this project I illustrated the Queen Mary docked in front of the large white dome, which I of course, turned into a large golf ball.
