Problem and Project Objective
I’ve always been a fan of Disney trivia, and more specifically, I’ve loved the Walt Disney World trivia books that Lou Mongello put out a number of years ago. (In fact, I even met Lou at a gathering a while back and asked him to autograph one of our copies, but that’s just the geek in me and I digress…)
This specific brand of trivia is especially great to have in the parks with you while you’re there, waiting in line for example, and could use a fun diversion. The problem with a book is that it’s somewhat cumbersome to carry around with you. Furthermore, there’s the issue of keeping the answers separate form the questions in book format to cut down on cheating. What this means is that there’s 20 pages between the question and the answer and you’re constantly having to flip back and forth as you make your way through the book. There’s really not much you can do about it in it’s original medium.
Taking Lou’s trivia questions and putting them into a mobile app solves a number of problems inherently native to the book format. In app format:
• Trivia content is no longer cumbersome to carry around in a book, but is now easily accessible and always with you on your phone
• There’s no more 20 page gap between the question and the answer, as the user gets it in immediate feedback after guessing
• Lou’s trivia content is relevant again as the user interacts with the questions in a fun quiz-style environment with a score at the end.
Ideation & Approach
I wanted to create an app that is simple to use and basically fades into the background giving spotlight to the trivia. That means no frills or bells & whistles. Essentially the app flow is as follows: the user chooses a park (or trivia from all parks) from the home screen, answers 5-10 questions, gets score, and begins again. There’s also no time limit, so the user isn’t rushed to guess but can give more thought to their answer.
What really makes this app stand out from the other “theme park trivia” apps out there, is the simple stripped down design and large body of content that Lou has created. Not only are there more questions than other apps, but each answer is accompanied by a short blurb giving a little more background to the question and enhancing the user’s experience. I’ve also built in an unobtrusive “More from Lou” advertising screen that you can access from the home screen that slides in from the bottom and back out again when dismissed.
The result is a fun & simple app that can be used anywhere for short bursts of trivia fun while waiting in line for an attraction, or just taking a short break from the monotony of daily routine.
